Dental Specialties Overview

Dentistry is the field of healthcare focused to managing inside and around the mouth, including the jaws and teeth

There are different kinds of dental practitioners within dentistry. The most common is a general dentist who is like a GP doctor for your mouth.

Dental specialists are dentists who have done further study in one discipline within dentistry, and only perform oral health services related to that specialty, like a cardiologist or heart doctor does in medicine.

Oral health practitioners and dental prosthetists are similar to nurse practitioners in medicine, able to do some procedures that dentists or dental specialists do, but not all, and not to the same level of complexity in most situations.

All dental practitioners have a valuable part to play in your oral healthcare.

These dentists are your regular or general practitioner dentists. They’re your first port of call for all your dental needs. They may have niche or hobby areas of practice such as cosmetic or laser dentistry but are experienced across a wide range of areas within dentistry. Oral Health Practitioners

aka mouth care coaches

ViDe oral health practitioners photo

These valuable dental professionals are passionate to help and coach you how not to need dental services beyond a twice yearly checkup and clean if they can. Oral health practitioners have studied less about complex dental diagnosis and restorative smile engineering and more about mouth disease prevention, maintenance and initial management. They’re not dentists or dental specialists, but can be more willing to listen to your situation!

Oral health practitioners are especially excellent with kids, the anxious and the elderly. These lovely therapists will likely hold your hand while they work with you to brighten your smile, take care of your gums, or help manage your preventive oral care needs. They often support general dentists or dental specialists such as orthodontists and periodontists. They can be:

  • Dental hygienists - specialised in teeth cleaning and gum care management for all ages;

  • Dental therapists - specialised in kids dental care, including fillings and some extractions, you may know them as “school dentists”. Some have done further study to extend their services to adults in certain situations; or

  • Oral health therapists - qualified in both dental hygiene and dental therapy

Yes, it can be confusing! Not currently available for ViDe online consults, these mouth care coaches will ideally become an integral part of your yearly mouth care management, just like a fitness instructor does with your fitness or a financial advisor does with your finances.

Dental Prosthesists

aka denture or false teeth makers

ViDe dental prosthesists aka denture or false teeth makers

These dental professionals are dental technicians who have done further study to be able to make and fit false teeth for you directly. They are not dentists, dental specialists or oral health practitioners.

Dental prosthesists work with denture-making all day, every day, so often the cost to you is cheaper than a dentist and the result can be more comfortable. They’re wizzes at repairing and modifying existing dentures too. Be mindful, they don’t have the training to assess your overall mouth health.

You’re required to have a dental checkup with a dentist immediately before having new dentures made by a dental prosthesist. These dental practitioners are not available for ViDe online consults, however you may be referred to one for your false teeth needs.
